“A regular skin checkup can literally save your life.” Jennifer Krasnoff, MD

What you Should Know:
An abscess Incision and Drainage (I & D) is a procedure to cut open the skin and drain pus from the abscess. An abscess is a collection of pus in a warm, red, tender, and swollen boil. It is most commonly caused by bacteria (germs). An abscess may occur anywhere in or on the body, including the skin.

During an incision and drainage procedure, pus can be collected from the abscess and sent to a lab for culture. This may help identify the bacteria causing the infection and help determine the medication given to you to kill the bacteria.

Wound Care:
Do not remove the bandage over your wound unless your caregiver says it is OK. Keep the bandage clean and dry.

If instructed by your provider to change your dressing, clean the area first with clean shower or bath water and pat dry. Apply your medicated ointment to the wound and cover with a gauze dressing or an appropriate bandage.

If your provider has placed packing in the wound DO NOT pull out the packing unless your provider has specifically told you to do so.
Wash your hands before and after taking care of your wound to prevent spreading an infection.

Contact our office if:

  • You have a fever.
  • You have more swelling, redness, drainage, or bleeding. Your skin is itchy, swollen, or has a rash.
