Acne and Surgical Scars

Treatment for acne and surgical scars

Acne and surgical scars can linger long after the initial injury to the skin. These conditions were traditionally treated with tissue-destructive methods such as sanding, chemicals or dermabrasion, or with ablative methods, such as CO2 and Er:YAG lasers, requiring prolonged healing time. Laser treatment has now proven to be highly effective at permanently resolving these conditions, by stimulating new collagen growth from the inside out. This non-ablative rejuvenation heats underlying skin tissue to promote new collagen growth, without harming surface tissue. At Dermatology Associates, we use Fraxel and Excimer Laser as excellent ways to treat localized skin ailments such as acne and scarring by emitting high intensity, focused light beams to rapidly clear the skin without risk to healthy, surrounding areas.

What to expect

Thirty to sixty minutes prior to treatment, you will receive topical numbing cream to the treatment area. When the skin is numb, the cream is removed, and treatment begins. Treatments last between 15-45 minutes. Laser acne scar treatments require one to five treatments, spaced approximately four weeks apart.

Following treatment, you may feel a sunburn-like sensation, and mild swelling which is relieved by applying ice packs to the area. Makeup and sunscreen can be applied immediately following treatment. The procedure involves two to three days downtime, during which you may experience continued mild swelling and redness.
