“A regular skin checkup can literally save your life.” Jennifer Krasnoff, MD

Intertrigo is a condition often found in skin fold areas of the underarms, beneath the breasts and in the groin creases.  Increased humidity in the summer and/or tight fitting clothes can predispose someone to this condition.  Sometimes a secondary fungal infection can take place in this moist environment and complicate the existing intertrigo rash.  Two key elements in preventing intertrigo are regular application of drying agents and loose fitting clothing.

We recommend Zeasorb AF powder or lotion – an over-the-counter product that can absorb excess moisture, provide a protective coating along the skin fold, minimize excess chafing and provide antifungal protection.  Daily use will minimize recurrence of intertrigo.

Loose-fitting clothing will also alleviate this condition.  Avoid tight-fitting briefs and pants.  In particular, men should consider wearing boxer briefs and loose-fitting slacks or shorts when home.  If the rash is persistent, carefully use a blow-dryer for a minute or two to reduce excess moisture in affected skin folds.

A low-strength steroid or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent may be added to your regimen to hasten resolution. Topical steroids should be limited to 2 weeks, as they may cause the skin to thin

Cooling medications in the refrigerator can help to sooth burning or irritated skin.

If there is any suspicion of fungal infection, we will instruct you to apply an antifungal cream for a few days prior to starting anti-inflammatory agents.  Zeasorb AF powder should be used on top of your prescribed medicated creams to keep the areas dry.
