“A regular skin checkup can literally save your life.” Jennifer Krasnoff, MD

Mechanism:
There are numerous hair removal lasers of different wavelengths on the market today. All of them rely on melanin targeting to dame the hair follicle and eventually reduce hair density. The Medlite laser, at 1064 nm, targets subcellular hair follicle sacs known as melanosomes. These submicroscopic pigment cell particles are damaged as well as the follicle itself by a photo acoustic effect. The Nd: YAG laser is fast and virtually painless, and can be used to treat all skin types. It can be used for rapid laser “waxing” of unwanted hair as well. Unfortunately, as yet there is no long term data on the degree of permanence of hair density reduction achievable with this laser. Ongoing studies are being performed to determine this data. At present, it is safe to say that the laser has resulted in a 6-week to 4-month reduction in hair density in treated patients. The Nd: YAG laser is most suitable for removal of darker hairs. Blonde, gray or lighter hairs respond variably, and true red hair responds poorly.

The Procedure Itself:
Hair is shaved right before the procedure, upon impact of the laser beam; immediate whitening of any hair showing is noted. These whitened hairs can be shaved away. The remaining hair shaft inside the hair follicle will be “purged” over the next two weeks. Initially, it is recommended that the patient undergo a series of 3 treatments at 2-week intervals followed by a period of assessment to determine how much hair will regrow, and how fast the hair will return.

What To Expect:
Approximately 3-7 days after your laser procedure, you will note that hairs will be purged or shed from the follicle leaving a smooth surface. A varying number of hairs, which are in the resting cycle at the time of lasing, may grow back in between treatments.

Complication:
It is unusual to develop any complications from treatment with this laser. Immediately post-lasing, however, you may notice somewhat sensitive pink skin similar to mild razor burn. This usually resolves within a few hours. Any discomfort associated with the procedure can be minimized the evening after the procedure by use of cool compresses or ice packs. The next day, a light application of moisturizing lotion can be kept on the lased area. Long term complications from this procedure are unknown, but could theoretically include pigmentary abnormalities such as lightening or darkening of the skin, which in rare cases, could be persistent.

Post-Operative Care:
No post-operative care is necessary. If stinging or burning occurs, a light coating of emollient such as Aquaphor healing ointment may be applied to the lased area. Post-inflammatory darkening of the skin in the treated area is possible, but extremely unlikely.

I agree that pre- & post-operative clinical photographs and videos may be taken to monitor my treatment progress and for patient educational purposes. I understand that my identity will be protected.

I certify that I have read and understand the contents of this consent form. I have been given the opportunity to ask the doctor/staff any questions that I have about the procedure, and all of my questions have been answered. The doctor/staff has explained the procedure and its alternatives to me, and I both understand and accept the risks involved in this procedure.
