Laser and Phototherapy for Psoriasis

Excimer Laser offers an excellent way of treating psoriasis. By emitting high intensity beams of ultraviolet light (UVB) directly at psoriasis patches. This concentrated light enables rapid clearing of lesions without damaging surrounding healthy skin.

Laser treatment has been proven particularly helpful to address psoriasis lesions on the hands and feet, as well as thickened, localized plaques that may be slow to respond to other types of treatment such as topical corticosteroids.

What to expect from Excimer Laser treatment

After determining the optimal dosage level of light your condition requires, your physician will move the Excimer Laser handpiece across the affected area, applying laser light at your determined dose. Depending on the area to be treated, this only takes a few minutes.Treatment sessions last only a few minutes, during which you may feel some warmth at the site, or a rubber band ‘snapping’ sensation against the skin. An average of two treatments per week and 4-10 sessions are usually recommended for optimal results.

Side effects from Excimer Laser are minimal, including mild to short-lived redness at the treatment site. More serious side-effects such as blistering and hyperpigmentation are rare and short-lived. Access our Excimer Laser Consent Form to learn more about expected side effects.

Phototherapy and Photodynamic Therapy

Phototherapy uses ultraviolet (UVA and narrowband UVB) rays which calm the skin, while Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) uses light treatment in coordination with safe, topical medication to target affected areas of the skin.
