Laser and Photofacial Treatment for Sun Damage

At Dermatology Associates, we use Fraxel, Cutera Excel V laser therapy and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to treat signs of sun damage, such as facial lines and wrinkles, freckles, and age spots. IPL or Intense Pulsed Light treatment consists of a series of high-intensity pulses of broad spectrum light, whereas laser beam therapy delivers a direct beam of energy to one specific target, allowing for precise treatment of small brown spots, sun spots, and capillaries. Both modalities are highly effective, and our doctors can help guide you to the best procedure for your skin.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Is a non-invasive treatment that uses high intensity pulses of visible light to treat skin damage. The light emitted by IPL is absorbed by pigments in the lower layers of skin (dermis) without damaging upper layers (epidermis). Light is then converted into heat, which impacts the targeted tissue. IPL is a good option for patients seeking overall facial rejuvenation for conditions including facial redness, brown spots, freckles, sun spots and broken capillaries.

What to expect from IPL

IPL treatments require little to no anesthetic or downtime, and last about 20 minutes. Four to six sessions may be recommended, over a period of three to six weeks, to achieve desired results. Minor side effects may include mild pain during treatment, described as a mild pinch or snap of a rubber band. This is reduced with topical anesthetic or coolant. Post-procedure effects may include redness, mild irritation similar to a sunburn, and bruising. Learn about expected side effects following IPL.

Fraxel Laser Treatment

The Fraxel resurfacing laser treats surface pigment, treats wrinkles from aging and sun damage, acne scarring (craters). Our Dual Fraxel system treats superficial as well as deep wrinkles and scarring, and enables treatment of different skin types.

Excel V Laser Treatment

Excel V combines two powerfully precise lasers to target and eliminate vascular concerns (redness, unsightly veins) and benign pigmented lesions (age spots, sun spots, discoloration) on the face and body. The most common excel V treatments include rosacea, facial and leg veins, age/brown spots, and acne scars.

What to expect from Excel V laser treatment

When you arrive at our office, a nurse will apply a topical numbing cream to the treatment area. After approximately 30 minutes, the numbing cream is removed. During a 15 minute treatment, a physician administers a pulse of light to the treatment area. You may experience a snapping rubberband or hot needle sensation After the brief procedure, you may receive ice packs or cool water to ease any discomfort or mild swelling. The procedures requires minimal downtime. Side effects following include swelling and mild scabbing.
